Sunlight reflected from slim lady

Venus will be at the brightest moment (magnitude -4.5) of this excursion into the morning sky, on Sep. 18, theoretically at 12 by Universal Time.

Venus is magnified 150 times to show the crescent shape you can see with binoculars. Arrows through solar-system bodies show their movement over 5 days, against the starry background.

The brightest moment is the first of the “cluster of climaxes” in this Venus apparition, as is explained over several pages in my occasionally risqué book about the planet and goddess. There are also the maximum illuminated area (Sep. 19), dichotomy (Oct. 22), and greatest elongation westward (Oct. 23).

This weblog maintains its right to be about astronomy or anything under the sun.

ILLUSTRATIONS in these posts are made with precision but have to be inserted in another format.  You may be able to enlarge them on your monitor.  One way: right-click, and choose “View image” or “Open image in new tab”, then enlarge.  Or choose “Copy image”, then put it on your desktop, then open it.  On an iPad or phone, use the finger gesture that enlarges (spreading with two fingers, or tapping and dragging with three fingers).  Other methods have been suggested, such as dragging the image to the desktop and opening it in other ways.

Sometimes I make improvements or corrections to a post after publishing  it.  If you click on the title, rather than on ‘Read more’, I think you are sure to see the latest version.  Or you can click ‘Refresh’ to get the latest version.

  1. I’d send you a nice photo or two of the crescent, if you’d like. Hope your print version of the cal is ready soon and you are doing well.
