Return to tower and lake

Believe it or not, I’m quite well along in making Astronomical Calendar 2024, and here for example is part of the globe picture for the total solar eclipse that will cross the USA on April 8,

with the cone of the total shadow, and the path it will trace from Texas to Newfoundland.

It reminds us strongly of the previous USA-crossing total eclipse, 2017 August 21, which slanted in the opposite southeastward direction, and for which I revisited the Furman campus at Greenville, SC. Our correspondent Rick Scheithauer recently told me he was to visit the same place and thought he remembered my mentioning a tower. I suggested he look back at this blog post. You might take another look at my four paintings that try to capture the emotions of eclipse.

ILLUSTRATIONS in these posts are made with precision but have to be inserted in another format.  You may be able to enlarge them on your monitor.  One way: right-click, and choose “View image” or “Open image in new tab”, then enlarge.  Or choose “Copy image”, then put it on your desktop, then open it.  On an iPad or phone, use the finger gesture that enlarges (spreading with two fingers, or tapping and dragging with three fingers).  Other methods have been suggested, such as dragging the image to the desktop and opening it in other ways.

  1. I’m in Johannesburg at the moment. Nice to receive one of your posts immediately, rather than the following morning.
