See the end note about enlarging illustrations.

If you travel on a London train, you constantly hear a big voice: “MIND THE GAP between the train and the platform.”
One time today, I heard: “MIND THE GAP between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.”
I wasn’t dreaming, though I may have been nightmaring.

In the port city Mariupol, under constant bombardment, people have been without power, heat, and water – water – for more than two weeks. More than 2,500 have died.
Wars can be classified. Some are fought against kings, regimes, armies, but not against populations. Others are wars against populations. I’m tempted to assign one or other class to the wars waged by Assyria, Macedon, Rome, the Mongols, the Incas, Spain, Britain, America, but care and study may be needed. The present war is a war against a population.

ILLUSTRATIONS in these posts are made with precision but have to be inserted in another format. You may be able to enlarge them on your monitor. One way: right-click, and choose “View image”, then enlarge. Or choose “Copy image”, then put it on your desktop, then open it. On an iPad or phone, use the finger gesture that enlarges (spreading with two fingers, or tapping and dragging with three fingers). Other methods have been suggested, such as dragging the image to the desktop and opening it in other ways.
Sometimes I make improvements or corrections to a post after publishing it. If you click on the title, rather than on ‘Read more’, I think you are sure to see the latest version. Or you can click ‘Refresh’ to get the latest version.
This weblog maintains its right to be about astronomy or anything under the sun.
As you might expect, I continue to image the evolving planet scenes in our morning skies :) Only when I look at my images from one day to the next does the movement of the planets, even in one or two days, become so clearly apparent.

Yes, the despot is targeting the civilian population. And we are watching the butchering on tv …. This is so sad and maddening.
