Dream constellation

I woke from a dream with a jolt: I was lifting a long object to a kitchen shelf, the long object was a baguette, or it was a dish, or it was a dish with a baguette on it, and on it too was a cup, which slipped off and would have smashed on the floor, but I caught it in mid air. And the long object was also a constellation, the shelf was the equator, the cup was the Sun, falling as it slid across the equator. And I thought: it fits, I can make something of this, the Sun is indeed about to slide down across the celestial equator.

Jolt-dreams may be caused by a missed heartbeat or a bedfellow’s twitch. Whatever your mind has been fretting with – astronomy, bicycling, long-ago friends – gets into your dreams and becomes scrambled in analogies that don’t make sense. Along the ecliptic there are two long constellations that slide across the celestial equator: Pisces at the spring equinox and Virgo at the fall equinox. But the Sun isn’t about to reach either of them: it is aiming to reach, in a month’s time, the winter solstice. Both solstices, in our age, are not in the middles of long constellations but are near junctions of constellations: Taurus and Gemini in the north, Ophiuchus and Sagittarius in the south.

This is from the Zodiac Wavy Chart for 2021, but one of the improvements in the 2022 version is an indication of the solstice:

It’s interesting to compare the swirlings of the planets around the Sun in different years. Easier to see them in a chart than in this part of the real sky!

ILLUSTRATIONS in these posts are made with precision but have to be inserted in another format.  You may be able to enlarge them on your monitor.  One way: right-click, and choose “View image”, then enlarge.  Or choose “Copy image”, then put it on your desktop, then open it.  On an iPad or phone, use the finger gesture that enlarges (spreading with two fingers, or tapping and dragging with three fingers).  Other methods have been suggested, such as dragging the image to the desktop and opening it in other ways.

This weblog maintains its right to be about astronomy or anything under the sun.

  1. LAst dream I remember was one in which I flew (on a plane) to Copenhagen, and at teh airport in Copenhagen, the Queen of Denmark (Margrethe) was operating the security checkpoint—dressed in a blue ballgown.

  2. As Blondie sang ‘Dreaming is Free’and there’s various types of dreams most seem to be shuffling stuff around in your mind but more interesting, and frightening, stuff is one called sleep paralysis when it feels like a malevolent entity has turned up and some kind of energy is pouring down through you.Well I’m not 100 percent sure sleep paralysis is a form of dream as it feels pretty real as does the entity…. perhaps it belongs in the ‘more things in heaven and earth category’?

  3. Ophiuchus is an interesting one as it’s in the Zodiac but as far as I know astrologers don’t dabble with it.Cetus the Whale 🐋🐳 touches the Zodiac but doesn’t appear to be actually in it?It is probably the case that the modern boundaries of Ophiuchus ⛎ where consolidated by Eugene Delporte in 1930 and perviously it wasn’t in the Zodiac?

    1. Ophiuchus is an ancient constellation, included in Ptolemy’s 48, so it had to get a boundary when the boundaries were defined. Though the ecliptic runs through it, it does not count as a member of the zodiac, which consists of the 12 30-degree-wide “signs”. You could say it’s the only ecliptic constellation that does not have a name corresponding with one of the signs.

      1. The delineators of the IAU constellation boundaries had a perverse antipathy to Scorpius. All of the ecliptic that passes through official Ophiuchus is closer to Beta Scorpii and Antares than to any of the stars that make up the main outline of Ophiuchus. Theta Ophiuchi is the only possible exception. So at most a tiny sliver of the ecliptic between Scorpius and Sagittarius should be allotted to Ophiuchus.

        Harrumph.

Like many people during the initial pandemic shutdown in the Spring of 2020, I started getting more sleep and remembering my dreams more consistently. I started writing them down in the morning, just a few words about what happened in a dream, usually not any interpretation. I’ve kept doing that. My dreams have gotten more varied and interesting, or maybe I just remember more of the unusual ones, not just the repetitive ones about my most familiar neuroses. Nowadays, even when I can’t remember the details, I still remember the overall feeling tone.

Is the 2022 zodiac wavy chart available for order now?

          1. You wrote: ” … I noticed … that there is in dreaming no real death and no consummated sex, that seeking never finds … . ”

I’ve never died in a dream, nor witnessed a human or other animal dying, but there have been plenty of corpses and carcasses. I’m afraid that defining sexual consummation might be embarrassing. All my dreams of seeking are endlessly elliptical. I never get where I’m going, never find what I’m looking for.

I’ve never considered the possibility that we might dream more than one dream at a time. Interesting thought. The dream world is a bardo, a world between worlds.
