This lane (called the Springhead Road) runs almost straight
and level, along the top of an arm of the plateau called Whitty
Down; at first between banks of ferns. Down to the right, Winter's
Farm nestles in the exact head of the Rocombe valley. Then another
lane (with a house called Whitty Down on the corner) dips away into
that valley.
You could turn down this. Or keep
straight.
To help you choose: the road ahead runs out to the nose of the plateau and drops off it, while the one to the right descends part way, then runs like a shelf along the hillside. Ahead remains fairly plain, whereas Right becomes one of the most charming lanes in England. They both lead to the same point, but Ahead does offer one other option.
