Twenty steps twist down
to a pavement in front of one of the shops in the root of the building.
PICTURE:
Go around the corner to the left
and up the street; or turn right along
the broad pathway sloping toward the sea; or forge ahead
across the street, either waiting for a gap in the traffic or making
one. There's no pedestrian crossing here or anywhere on Broad Street,
probably because the authorities have given up on choosing any one
spot: pedestrians rule, and flow across anywhere they like. (The
best system for peopleful streets, as has recently been recognized
by making == in London a street without markings.)
